The Nottingham Children’s Portrait of the Year 2018

This summer, we embarked upon a project to capture creative portraits of local children for their families whilst raising money for the Big Appeal for Nottingham Children's Hospital. We challenged ourselves by offering four different portrait styles for families to choose between to suit the age of the children, their style and their homes:   Heroic portraits celebrating their inner superhero with costumes, cinematic backdrops and theatrical props. Enchanted portraits with a magical feel using a range of beautiful fairy and elf costumes and a fairytale set. Floral portraits with creative styling, elegant poses and soft lighting capturing feminine, ethereal images. Vintage portraits embracing the past with vintage clothes and accessories with a timeless and editorial feel.   We were thrilled by the number of entries we received from clients old and new and it was such good fun getting creative in the studio all through the summer. The entry images were chosen...

Most parents will agree that our children are the most important thing in our lives, but they change and grow so quickly! Photos have the magical ability to freeze a moment in time and we believe that capturing portraits to proudly display in your home is the perfect way to protect those precious memories for years to come.   Having photographed children for more than 16 years we’ve worked with screaming toddlers and moody teenagers, confident posers and camera-shy children alike and we’ve learnt the hard way what to do (and what not to do) when it comes to photographing children of all ages.   So here are our top tips to ensure you make the most of your child's photoshoot:     1 - Book a photoshoot at the right time of day Generally younger children are happier in the morning, but teenagers are grumpy if you wake them too early. You want everyone to be in...

Celebrating natural beauty with floral portraits

Our fabulous photographer Marija (Fresh Fashion Photographer of the Year 2015)  has developed a new style of portrait for the studio this summer, beginning with Lily's photoshoot back in May where she used wildflowers to create striking yet delicate portraits. https://www.photonottingham.co.uk/creating-powerful-images-in-a-delicate-photoshoot/     Through June, Marija experimented with different flowers, clothing, lighting styles and backgrounds whilst retaining the simplicity of the portraits.       The fresh flowers seem to compliment the girls' natural beauty and the most effective images usually combined bare shoulders and soft light which gave an ethereal glow.     She also experimented with different poses and brought out the wind machine which was really effective for a windswept yet glamorous look. We're thrilled with how it all went, but most importantly the girls and their parents loved the photos and really enjoyed the whole process!     "Caitlin has been confident when talking about her photoshoot. She enjoyed all the different things that Marija did and it’s shown in the way she...

Capturing their inner superhero with creative portraits

We're thrilled to share with you the results of a very exciting creative day we held at the studio earlier this month! Inspired by the ever-popular Marvel and DC films, we captured cinematic portraits of secret superheroes from age 4 to adults.   We hired fantastic cinematic backgrounds, theatrical props and costumes for the day and got creative in the studio with wind machines, coloured lights, heroic poses, action shots and a lot of fun!       "Our daughter has always been a superhero to us, but this was a great way for her to experience it first hand. She got to choose her outfit and be who she wanted to be. The team were great: getting her to do action shots, allowing her to create some of her own, and generally making sure she had an amazing time. We are thrilled with the results and she's already asking when she can do it again!" Jessica       "Logan loved the photoshoot and his inner superhero definitely shone...

Supporting The Big Appeal for Nottingham Children’s Hospital

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]We're very excited to be working with Nottingham Hospital's Charity this Summer to raise money for The Big Appeal for Nottingham Children's Hospital.   The Children’s Hospital in the Queen’s Medical Centre cares for over 60,000 babies, children and young people from across the East Midlands. As a local studio, we have met many families over the years who have spoken highly of the support they've had from the hospital, but there's so much more they want to offer young people and their families.   The Big Appeal aims to raise £4 million over four years to provide specialised diagnostic equipment to improve outcomes for children of all ages and in-hospital facilities so that their parents can have a comfortable home-from-home while their children are receiving care.       We're offering a range of creative photoshoots for children and teenagers from 9 months old to 18 years old for just a £20 donation to The Big Appeal this summer at the...

Creating powerful images in a delicate photoshoot

We were delighted to see Lily back at the studio last week for an editorial style photoshoot with Marija, our family and fashion photographer. This was her third photoshoot with us at the studio, so we wanted to create images that were different to anything we’d captured for her and her family before.     Lily is an elegant young lady and very mature for her age; so we decided to create something inspired by a bygone era that spoke of an “old soul”. As an aspiring model, Lily was more than happy to go with us and be patient while we tried new ideas.   With this in mind, Marija headed off to plan the styling and find some beautiful wild flowers. I must admit, it was only after the shoot that we realised how appropriate these would be given her floral name!     The photoshoot began with bare shoulders, wild flowers and a soft light...

How to make a great first impression

When I opened Photo Nottingham back in 2002, the first thing I did was to have a brochure printed and attend networking events to meet potential clients in the local area. Shaking hands and discussing business over breakfast, the first impression I gave of my business was me! What I said, the way I was dressed and of course the brochure.   I’ll be honest, if I could go back now I would change some things… but for better or worse I represented my studio in person and on paper and spent a fortune on leaflets, business cards, posters and (of course) adverts in the Yellow Pages!   Skip forward 16 years and the situation is entirely different. Most of our clients find our studio online, searching on Google or finding us on Facebook. So now their first impression of my business is my website and social media presence.     We all spend a lot of...
